Samus Its Funny You Would Think That
But you're still standing here
I reblog from various fandoms and vent about anything that comes to mind. 26 years old, Italian, studying Japanese and Spanish.

Y'know it's kinda funny how, when you think about it, Samus' designs in Samus Returns and Dread are basically Other M's (same hairstyle with shorter bangs, hair parted to the side and lower ponytail, the mole, the design of the Zero suit etc), with the main difference that she doesn't look like a school girl waiting for her crush to tell her she can breathe
That's what happens when you respect your protagonist :P
Can you imagine these total chads stumbling on their feet and cry begging for their senpai to not leave them alone? Me neither
But seriously, OM's design isn't bad in a vacuum, stunted height and weird heels aside. I'm glad the future games improved on its concepts

Do you mind ranking Metroid final bosses? I would like to hear your thoughts on them.
12) Mother Brain (ZM): fuck you so much. i hate you and everything you stand for.
11) Mother Brain (M1): fuck you too, slightly less so because at least she's constantly vulnerable to make up for the amount of shit she throws at you (a detail ZM missed)
10) Omega Metroid: meh? Literally a waste of precious time.
9) Mecha Ridley (<100%): its only strength is that its core is hard to hit, but it still goes down in 6 Super Missiles.
8) Queen Metroid (OM): the first phase can eat me (if you didn't hate the way you shoot missiles in this game before, boy will you hate it now), but after that it becomes much more fun… I just hope that you know that you can use Power Bombs at the very end, because the game sure won't tell you…
7) Phantoon: it's okay. Not too hard, not too easy, but if you don't know an obscure piece of lore about this boss it feels very out of nowhere and nostalgia pandering.
6) Mother Brain (SM): not really a fight, as you really have to suck to die here, but it compensates with being the climax of the Baby plot. Blasting her with the Hyper Beam is so good <3
5) SA-X: the first phase is so satisfying! You can finally go up against the creature that gave you so much grief throughout the game! Their Screw Attacks clashing looks so cool. But then the second phase has to ruin everything…
4) Metroid Prime: it's way too long, but if you want a challenge, this may be the hardest boss in the game. It forces you to use every weapon you have and it testes your reflexes. The second phase makes you use different visors to complete the set, and when you blast it with the Hyper Beam, boy does it feel cathartic
3) Aurora Unit 313: poor 313, forced to become Dark Samus' tool. I think Dark Samus would have been a good final boss just fine, but this Mother Brain 2.0 isn't bad at all. It's another marathon boss, with the first phase mainly focused on stunning her and the second one being hard to hit, but thankfully P3 has great controls. Also I'm biased because I love how you use the Grapple Beam in this game :P
2) Queen Metroid (AM2R): yes I count it :P a much more engaging fight than in M2, without being as assholish as the OM version - although I like how it references the latter in its last part. It's tricky, but not cheap (yeah that acid attack gave me trouble).
1) Dark Samus (P3): this bitch! After mentally tormenting you for the entire game, taking her down feels so good. The fight feels like an improved version of her fighting style in P2, which I already liked. I also like how, much like in P2, you're on a timer, although it's the time you have left until you get permanently corrupted (I love the whole Phaaze concept by the way). Also she's such a showoff, truly Samus' evil clone :P
(never finished M2, P2 or SR, nor have I played Dread or Prime Hunters, so I skipped them. I'd probably put Proteus Ridley and Raven Beak very high up, though, maybe 2nd and 1st place respectively)

Ooh, a quick metroid question if you don't mind! Favorite music tracks from the series? And which game(s) do you think have the best soundtracks overall?
Ah, tricky questions :P
Let's start with the easier one: my favorite soundtrack is Prime 1's. I adore its iconic style, it nailed the balance between ambience and atmosphere, and excuse me can we talk about Tallon IV, Phendrana Drifts and Wrecked Ship Frigate Orpheon?
Super Metroid is of course a close second, with gems such as Brinstar Green, Brinstar Red, Maridia Rocky, Lower Norfair and Samus' theme. And the first Crateria theme, with the crunched rain sfx? And the never-mentioned Upper Norfair, that somehow feels like sweltering hot lava? Way to squeeze that SNES soundchip.
As for singular themes… that's much harder. I'll mention just a handful of them, aside from those above:
- Kraid's Lair
- Norfair
- Surface of SR-388
- Omega Territory
- Sector 4 Underwater
- Crisis Mission
- Space Pirate Mother Ship
- Torvus Bog
- Sanctuary Fortress
- Bryyo Cliffside
- Bryyo Ice
- SkyTown
- Ridley's Theme (Other M)
- Final Mission Resolve
- Jungle Temple
- Artaria 2
- Burenia Level 1
- Burenia Level 2

May I inquire a more... mmmm... detailed opinion on the baby Other M? The game's pretty infamous, and even if you haven't played it, I'm kind of curious to hear your overall impression of it.
boy.
No, I haven't played it, and from what I've seen, the opinions on the gameplay itself range from "it's okay, kinda enjoyable" to "it's super easy, empty and boring and the controls suck ass". Too bad as a third person 3D Metroid could be cool.
But the plot? Oh man. It is so fascinating. It's a combination of Sakamoto's pathological perfectionism and some serious values dissonance in what makes a compelling female character (not only Samus' VA was directed to sound that wooden because it's perceived as badass in Japan, I've read that a big concept in the story is filial piety, which makes sense in Japan but it's not as felt in the West), and the result is a story that can be seen as romanticizing abuse. It's incredible. They did so much wrong, and it's not just annoying to sit through (thebabythebabythebaby), it's legit uncomfortable. I'm not one to accuse media of being sexist at the drop of a hat, but Samus in this game, the way she suddenly defers to Adam even when it's detrimental to her, the fact that they shrunk her, genuinely feels offensive to women. Even worse as this is not a prequel before she became the badass we knew in M1, it comes after Super, it's as of now the third-to-last game in the series chronologically. It almost feels like a deliberate retcon.
And unlike other hated games like Sonic '06, OM is the result of everything going right… it's the ideas at the foundations that are wrong.
spinningbuster98 asked:
All this talk about Samus' beauty and femininity has made me picture Samus going to a hair stylist, talking about her missions to the other women there who stare at her with horrified expressions
Samus, while her hair is drying: so, the craziest thing happened to me the other day, okay? I met another of my dads, I think this is the 4th one, and he psychologically tormented me until my new Metroid genes - yes those things that sucked your lifeforce until you die, but I've exterminated them a while ago, don't worry - I was saying, until my new Metroid genes awakened and turned me into a monster capable of destroying planets with a touch - well, not that's something new for me. Oh, and I also accidentally destroyed the ecosytem of a planet… again… by releasing these shapeshifting parasites that kill and replace you. I wonder what happened to them… I was sure there was a ship on the surface, but when I came back it disappeared…

spinningbuster98 asked:
Would you say that Other M has lessened your opinion of Fusion somewhat?
Not at all. Fusion is Fusion and OM is OM, and OM is so self contained that it's very easy to pretend it never happened, in fact the experience is only better for it.
Actually, OM made me think even better of Fusion! Because OM is Fusion but 3D but bad, it only highlights how Fusion managed to do what OM vaguely hoped it could reach, like the sense of powerlessness, the linearity that ties up with how Samus has to break free from the GF's clutches and regain her strength and independence, how Samus' internal monologues flesh her personality out but are still consistent with her older portrayals, and also how fun Fusion is because, unlike OM, it wanted to be its own thing, not too different from the established formula but not unrecognizeable either. And it's well designed. And it's challenging for the right reasons. And its art direction is memorable. And its OST has some quality ambience bangers. And I don't want to strangle Adam with my own hands.
so thanks om for making me realize how much you can never measure up to the game you tried to ape :)
spinningbuster98 asked:
Woke: Samus doesn't seek relationships because they would contrast against her line of work and independency Broke: Samus has never been in a relationship because she doesn't understand a lick of human societal norms which has led her to accidentally friendzone everyone who's ever tried to hit on her
Random guy: So… I've heard you're quite… flexible ;)
Samus: Oh no, it's only an illusion! When I curl into my Morph Ball form, I become pure energy incapsulated in my Suit! See, it's sophisticated Chozo technology that has been lost in time…
*two hours later*
Samus: … and this is why I now hate spiders with all my heart. Well, thanks for the talk, you're a good friend! :D
Random guy internally:
spinningbuster98 asked:
Ok this may be a bit of a heavy ask (maybe?) but what are your thoughts on the whole debackle about Samus' design, specifically her Zero Suit and more anime-like appearence post Fusion, being too fanservicy, objectifying and all that sort of thing?
Boy, this can of worms, huh :P
So the series' tradition of putting Samus in fanservice-y situations is a case of Fair for Its Day. Sure, revealing that the protagonist you've been playing as is a woman by showing her in a bikini is… not classy, but they probably had to emphasize her body the best way they could with the limited graphics. Also, the shock that Samus Is A Girl was much larger than "oh noooo boobies in my game" :P
Does that justify the tradition continuing way after the novelty had worn off, and especially after it became much less accepted to have fanservice for the sake of fanservice? Eh. I'll admit I was a little bummed that we didn't get to see Samus without her suit in Dread in 3D (and now I'm starting to wonder if this is the reason), but to be fair it wasn't because I need boobs in my life, I just wanted to see Samus' face :P
I also admit that I don't like the Zero Suit very much, it's… I don't know, boring? Oh, a skintight suit, okay I guess. I much prefer the two-piece suit she wore in SM, MF and ZM, which emphasized her athletic build. Is it less practical? Maybe, but dem abs in SM live in my head rent free <3
My take on female fanservice, as someone who has 0 interest in boobs and asses, is that, while it can easily cross the line of "uncomfortable", it's not inherently an insult on the female character in question; being conventionally sexy and being a badass are not mutually exclusive (nor are the two tied together). Some of my favorite female characters are Rouge and Mia for this precise reason: they're both obviously sexy, but they're also smart and competent at their jobs.
Femininity and beauty are not a requirement, but they're not a curse either.
In short, I'm not bothered, generally speaking, that Samus is conventionally pretty and the games really want you to know it. Do I prefer the buff Samus from SM and SR? Yep, absolutely. Do I feel offended at images like this?
Nah. You could say she's a female power fantasy, the equivalent of male heroes with more muscles than anatomically possible and kick all kinds of ass :P
There is, however, something to be said that Samus' status of undress is specifically a reward. The camera ogling Samus' ass in OM while she's doing a heartfelt speech is of a more typical poor taste (and this is what I meant by "generally" before) and something I can roll my eyes at and move on, but I don't know how I feel about "Psst! If you become really really good at the game, we'll give you a pretty woman in her underwear! Pretty good deal, huh? ;)"
(seriously the bikini is one thing but here she looks like she was about to go to bed)
I definitely prefer the approach of games like Zero Mission or Dread, where the real prize are the different images you can get by beating the game with certain requirements. Speaking of ZM, I also like how in that game you see Samus in different situations, my favorite being the one where she's collecting money in a bar. I think it's a good way to 1) reward the hard-working player 2) honor the old tradition of showing Samus in all her beauty 3) without feeling like cheap fanservice for the sake of it
